Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Change (22 May 2006, 3:38pm)

FEC 3/03 Reasons for ChangeGCO3811 Software Engineering is a core unit in the Bachelor of Information Technology Systems Development major, and an elective in the Business Systems major of the Bachelor of Information Technology. To fit into the program it must be moved to semester 2.In the new program students will require the new version of GCO2813 Information Systems Design as a prerequisite rather than GCO2816 Object-oriented Analysis and Design, which will be phased out. This move has no impact on the remaining Bachelor of Computing students.Previous changeThis unit has been running for many years as a core unit in the Bachelor of Computing for the System Development major and an elective for other majors. The proposal requests that changes to prerequisites be made in order to allow students from both the Bachelor of Computing and the Graduate Diploma in Computing at Gippsland to take this unit.

Objectives

Unit Content

Handbook Summary (15 Mar 2006, 12:03pm)

Software engineering is much more than the ability to analyse, design and develop program code to solve particular information system problems. Students will learn about many aspects of working with a large team on large projects to produce quality software products on time and within budget. The student will gain an appreciation of the tools and techniques used to develop software systems within a group context. Topics to be studied include: lifecycle models, sizing, estimation, planning and control of projects, functional specification and design of real-time systems, formal specification using Z, integration and testing strategies, configuration management and re-engineering.
