FEC 3/03 Reasons for ChangeThis unit has been offered since 1999 as a core third level unit in the Bachelor of Business and Electronic Commerce and as an elective in the Bachelor of Computing in all majors at Gippsland. The unit is designed to examine the intricacies of the information technology infrastructure requirements necessary for effective, efficient and secure practice of Electronic Commerce. Globalised business practices with the advent of Electronic Commerce demand developing and maintaining sophisticated technologies and standards in an ever increasing web oriented society. A thorough understanding of the best practice in Electronic Commerce requires a detailed examination of the new and emerging infrastructure processes and technologies and an understanding of standards and benchmarks for them.The current proposal serves the following purposes:

  1. To enter the units into avatar system and
  2. To update prerequisite to exclude BEG1601 which is no longer offered.

Objectives

Knowledge and Understanding (Cognitive Domain Objectives) (24 Apr 2006, 4:34pm)

On completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. develop a comprehensive knowledge about the global information infrastructure;
  2. understand the threats to electronic commerce on the Internet and potential security problem;
  3. understand the process for the design of secure systems;
  4. demonstrate the understanding and need for security protocol and procedure;
  5. understand the security issues and vulnerabilities of ecommerce servers and know the defective strategies;
  6. be aware of the problem arising from active content technologies;
  7. be familiar with XML standard and examine how it can be applied to develop ecommerce applications;
  8. understand and evaluate electronic payment mechanisms;
  9. appreciate the privacy and legal issues and be familiar with anonymity technologies;
  10. understand the applicability of intelligent software agent in electronic commerce.

Student will:

  1. appreciate the importance of secure information infrastructure in conducting electronic commerce;
  2. appreciate the privacy and legal issues;
  3. grasp the ongoing development in emerging electronic commerce technologies.

National and global infrastructures in use and planned for business using electronic commerce. Infrastructures at the local and workplace levels. Wide area networks and server technologies, multimedia; software agents; Internet security issues; introduction to XML; computer-mediated human and corporate communications; Internet commerce applications using XML; electronic payment mechanisms, including smart cards and smart card security, credit, debit and stored-value cards; privacy and anonymity technologies.
