FEC 3/03 Reasons for Change

The unit is one of those included in the new Bachelor of Information Technology and Part 2 of the Monash College program offered to IT students. This proposal seeks to change the name of the unit to reflect the breadth of topics, and its location of offering. The objectives have not changed as these still describe the range of topics effectively.

This is an existing unit. The purpose is to update the recommended reading and unit prohibitions.

  1. Explain the evolution and history, and the roles played by, both computers and software
  2. Evaluate and explain the functions of basic hardware components making up a modern computer system and their interaction
  3. Explain basic operating system concepts
  4. Demonstrate the relationship between hardware and operating systems
  5. Differentiate and explain the various technologies, components and uses of networked computer systems, data communications, the Internet and the Web
  6. Explain the concept of binary, octal and hexadecimal number systems, their notation and relationship to computers
  7. Demonstrate the manipulation of numbers in binary, octal and hexadecimal notations
  8. Explain and demonstrate how integers, floating points, and character data are encoded for use with computers and data communications
  9. Explain and demonstrate the uses of Boolean algebra and propositional logic in relation to computers
  10. Apply a wide range of both Windows and UNIX / Linux software utilities in relation to hardware, operating systems and data communications
  11. Explain the concepts and requirements for databases and their management

Summary (21 Sep 2004, 1:01pm)

This unit provides an overview of computer organisation and operating principles and covers; number systems, internal data representations, logic and Boolean algebra; computer components and interaction such as processors, primary memory / secondary memory; input / output devices; application / system software and operating system concepts. It also covers networking and data communications technologies; concepts and related issues such as security, viruses and ethics. Access to the university's computer systems through an internet service provider is compulsory for distance education students.
