FIT9012 is introduced as part of the offerings for The Graduate Diploma of Computing and the Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). This is a first generation entry for this unit in the re-structure of FIT postgraduate programs. This unit is replacing existing GCO9804 unit.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:20pm)

This is one of four core units in the Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). It offers theoretical knowledge and practical applications for the use of database technology to support a wide range of Information Systems in a variety of applications. The use of database technology for the persistent storage of information is a vital skill to acquire to enable students to be competitive and informed in their further study or future employment.

Its aims to: ensure students have fundamental knowledge and understanding of the disciplinary content areas that underpin the information technology field so that ultimately they can make informed professional decisions; and provide students with knowledge and understanding that transcend technologies and are robust over time so that students are well placed to deal with ongoing, rapid changes in the information technology field.

Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:20pm)

This unit will provide an introduction to the principles and concepts of database systems their organisation and management. The issues of physical and logical data description are addressed. Various data models, and a query language, are introduced. This will include planning, designing, using and implementing a data model using an enterprise-scale relational database system. Methods and techniques will also be presented to populate, retrieve, update and implement integrity features on data in the implemented database system.
