Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (24 Jul 2019, 4:00pm)

Cloud has been a transformative paradigm for the IT industry, and plays a critical role in shaping the society and modern economy. Adroit Market Research forecasts that Cloud Computing Market will grow at compound annual growth rate of 10.2% to hit 696.25 billion dollars by 2025. This huge business has arisen the need for education and training of scientists and engineers with Cloud skills who can effectively respond to the market demand. According to LinkedIn, Cloud and Distributed Computing Skill stays at the top of the 25 most demanded Job skills right now. While Cloud Adoption is a strategic move by many organisations, the longstanding security issues of cloud prevents enterprises from full adoption and deployment of cloud services. Thus, we pay special attention to cloud security in this unit. At Monash FIT, this topic has not been touched upon any unit. The proposal of this new unit aims to address the FIT Master of Networks and Security students? need for skills in one most in-demand jobs in the market through offering an introductory cloud computing and security unit bridging the knowledge and skill gap in this area.

Reasons for Change (17 Sep 2020, 4:13pm)

11/11/2019: Admin - Re-positioning the prerequisites to be intuitive and user-friendly; no formal changes made.

23/01/2020 Adel N. Toosi - There were some typos in the synopsis. I updated the text abit.

10/03/2020: Amending assessment weighting, for implementation S2, 2020. The current weight of 60% for the final exam posed an increased risk of failure to students, so have increased the assignments to 50% and decreased final exam to 50%.

17/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit you should be able to:

  1. describe fundamental principles and paradigms of cloud computing;
  2. identify appropriate design choices when developing real-world cloud computing applications;
  3. apply different cloud programming methods and tools;
  4. demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of virtualisation and container technologies;

Synopsis (23 Jan 2020, 2:25pm)

Cloud computing has emerged as a backend solution for many modern IT applications. It offers on-demand resources and subscription-based services in a pay-as-you-go model to individual and corporate end-users. Cloud computing facilitates setup, implementation, maintenance, and management of the integrated computation and storage services. This unit will enable students to develop a basic knowledge of cloud computing technology and design and implement cloud applications using cloud services. It also introduces the security and privacy issues of the off-the-shelf cloud services. Learning activities will focus on understanding cloud delivery and service models, identifying various cloud platforms, and fundamental cloud technologies such as virtualisation, containers, serverless, web services and their security challenges.
