FIT5130 Systems analysis and design - Disestablished by FEC 1/15 (09 Mar 2015, 12:24pm) [ SYS ANALYSIS DESIGN (23 Apr 2013, 09:01am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This unit replaced two existing units, SYS5140 Systems Analysis and Design V and SYS4071 Systems Analysis and Design IV, which were taught in the previous Masters degree structure (MIS). FIT5130 is a foundation unit in MIMS.

Reasons for Introduction (21 May 2013, 3:55pm)

Although based on an earlier unit (FIT9030), this is a largely new unit developed as a foundation unit in the Master of Business Information Systems to be introduced in 2014. The unit addresses foundational knowledge of techniques for designing information systems through requirements elicitation and conceptual modelling.

Reasons for Change (09 Mar 2015, 12:23pm)

Previous Change - This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

21 May, 2013 - The unit has been redesigned to provide foundational systems analysis and design knowledge as part of the Master of Business Information Systems degree commencing in 2014.

17/7/13 Correcting prohibitions. Effective Semester 1 2014.

12/8/13 - Modified objectives to learning outcomes for consistency with AQF requirements.

GPC 3/2014 endorsed changing FIT5130 foundation unit to FIT9130 foundation unit to differentiate the foundation units from the non-foundation units. This change will be reflected in the 3348 - Master of Information Technology; 3342 - Master of Business Information Systems and 4313 - Master of Information Technology Professional/Master of Business Information Systems Professional. FIT5130 will be disestablished at the end of 2014 and FIT9130 will be offered from Semester 1,2015.

09/03/2015 - This is a foundation unit in the Masters programs and has been replaced by FIT9130.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (21 May 2013, 3:59pm)

This is a foundation unit within the 2014 version of the Master of Business Information Systems. Students will have knowledge equivalent to a graduate from a cognate bachelors degree of designing information systems through requirements elicitation and conceptual modelling techniques.

Objectives

Objectives (12 Aug 2013, 3:32pm)

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • select and use conceptual and logical modelling techniques to design an information system
  • select and use techniques to elicit requirements for an information system design
  • select and use approaches to the systems development lifecycle including the waterfall model and modern alternatives
  • assess and discuss the capabilities and limitations of an information system
  • communicate the requirements for the business functionality of an information system in terms of data required, data storage and processing to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
