FIT5129 Enterprise IT Security - Planning, Operations and Management (28 May 2013, 4:52pm) []

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (17 May 2013, 1:17pm)

Created as part of the Master of Network and Security - 2014

Reasons for Change (08 Sep 2020, 2:28pm)

17/7/13 Adding ASCED code and teaching responsibility. Effective Semester 1 2014.

12/08/2013 changing the unit objectives as suggested by the education quality director.

09/07/2015: Change of pre-req by CE Phu Dung Le. Students who have completed FIT5037 have sufficient knowledge and experience to take FIT5129, therefore the requirement to complete FIT5163 is no longer necessary. Change to take effect in Semester 1,2016.

26/08/2015 added justification for 100% in-semester assessment by Phu Dung Le.

05/05/2016 made change to the unit assessment. This unit was developed in the same fashion as FIT5037 and FIT5037 assessment was changed from 100% in-semester assessment to 30% exam and 70% in-semester assessment. Therefore I am proposing the change to this unit assessments for the consistency across the security main stream of the Masters degrees.

8/5/2016: Amended assessment as changed by CE to just document what it has been changed to - CE has changed FIT5129 assessment from 100% in-semester assessment to 30% examination and 70% in-semester assessment for the purpose of maintaining consistency across the security stream of the Masters degrees.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

27/08/2020: Admin - update CE.

8/9/202: New CE (Chan Cheah) made 3 changes. Reasons for Changes:

  • From exam to 100% in semester assessment, to better aligned learning to concepts application/translational practice outcomes, via 3 major assessment tasks:
Individual Assignment 1 (critical literature review) - 25%; Group Assignment 2 (case study project report)- 50%; Individual Assignment 3 (reflective report) - 25%
  • Change Caulfield location to Clayton, to reflect FIT transfer to Clayton campus from 2020
  • Change Prerequisites/PreReqUnits from FIT5037 to FIT5163, based on advice from Joseph Liu
  • Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (27 Jul 2015, 2:55pm)

This is an elective unit of the Master of Network and Security offered from 2014. The unit will provide students important knowledge and practical experience in enterprise security planning, operations and management.

    Objectives

    Objectives (12 Aug 2013, 5:51pm)

    Synopsis (17 May 2013, 1:51pm)

Enterprise networks are highly complex infrastructures that demand correct management practices in planning, operations and security. Significant challenges arise from the scale of operations required as well as the increasingly common incidents of intrusion, sabotage, espionage or data theft, and vandalism. The unit will provide students with practical foundations in planning secure networks, policy-based operations and the implementation of security. Students will also be introduced to best practices in dealing with security breaches. Practical skills will be acquired through lab activities and case studies (projects).

    Assessment

    Assessment Summary (02 Nov 2020, 7:05pm)

    Assessment: 100% in-semester assessment.

There are 3 major in-semester assessment-assignments, which apply scaffolding learning and provide support for students: Individual Assignment 1, which focuses on developing research and critical thinking capabilities when applying the unit's knowledge; Group Assignment 2, which applies the unit's knowledge, research and critical thinking capabilities to solve a case-based problem; Individual Assignment 3 (replacing the exam), which develops reflective thinking from all that is learnt from the previous 2 assignments by students from both group and individual learning perspectives.

Students' work is authenticated via 2 ways:

  • Group Assignment 2 assesses students' formative learning as they incrementally prepare a final report for submission. Over several weeks, students in a group are required to formally submit weekly-workbooks and meet with their tutors on a weekly basis to show and discuss progressive development of their group report. During these compulsory consults and tutorials, their tutors will personally monitor and track not only their assignment work in development, but also from the perspectives of their group and individual learning progress made throughout the semester.
  • The Individual Reflective Thinking Assignment 3 requires each student to individually complete a given literature review and critical inquiry task first; and then reflect on that task's learning experience to complete the reflection report.
