The unit is consistent with the demands from the LIS profession and the workplace for students to be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills relating to reference processes, and an understanding of the principles and practice applied by libraries in selecting, acquiring/licensing, and providing users with access to all forms of information resources.

Reasons for Introduction (09 Dec 2007, 2:37pm)

The unit is core to the Library, Archival and Recordkeeping Systems professional track in the MIMS (up to 2008), and the MBIS (from 2009), for those who seek professional recognition with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). It is also core to the library stream of the Grad. Dip. IKM, which is also accredited by ALIA.

The unit provides core competencies for information professionals and meets the demands from the LIS profession for students to be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills relating to information provision, and an understanding of the principles and practice applied by collecting repositories in selecting, acquiring/licensing, and providing users with access to all forms of information resources. It evaluates the virtual library as an emergent knowledge commons.

Reasons for Change (17 Feb 2021, 11:08am)

The unit title is being changed from "Information access" to "Information access and use" to reflect the increasing importance of the ways in which information can be delivered and re-used. The change in title is also to align with the new MBIS being introduced in 2014.

18/7/13 Removal of prohibitions. Effective Semester 1 2014.

22/1/2014 - Change to contact hours made to align with Handbook entry (bulk upload from CUPID extract). Approved by ADE.

20/5/2014 - modified Unit Objectives to comply with AQF requirements.

1/06/2017 - Updating exam hours from 3 to 2 hours as required by new University Examination procedures, effective S1 2018.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

23/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

8/12/2020: Extension of tutorial time to 2 hours to provide more time for students to engage in unit-related classroom activities and discussion

9/12/2020: Updated learning outcomes to align with current environment, and to ensure relevance to MBIS student cohort

21/01/2021: Changed 'seminar' to 'tutorial' in order to ensure that delivery is not restricted to online mode only

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:19pm)

This is a core unit in the Library, Archival and Recordkeeping Systems professional track in Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) from 2009 for those who seek professional recognition with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). It is also core to the library stream of the Graduate Diploma Information Knowledge Management (IKM) which is also accredited by ALIA. It focuses on information provision and collection management in any real or virtual repository of knowledge. This unit is co-taught with FIT3123 Information Access in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) The unit connects with other core Library units and explores the epistemologies of knowledge, the network infrastructures that underlie its creation, dissemination and use, and the nature of patterns of organisational and individual use of knowledge. It provides up-to-date practice in the principles of information retrieval, and technologies for collection and management of information.

This unit introduces students to the major categories of information resources in all media and how they are accessed through a variety of common user interfaces from anywhere in the world. The process of satisfying these needs through the reference interview and the application of skilled search strategies is explored. The ways that information resources are procured by libraries and e-repositories through purchase or licensing, and supplied to users on a cost-effective, efficient basis are examined. Access and authentication, intellectual property law and professional duty of care are described.

Workloads

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • 2 hours of lectures
  • One 2-hour tutorial
  • (b.) Study schedule for off-campus students:

  • Off-campus students generally do not attend lecture and tutorial sessions, however should plan to spend equivalent time working through the relevant resources and participating in discussion groups each week.
  • (c.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • A minimum of 9 hours independent study per week for completing tutorial and project work, private study and revision.
