FIT5093 Business intelligence applications, will be offered as a unit in the Business Intelligence Professional track of the MBIS.

This unit is about the only graduate level unit to offer 1 hour tutorials. A change to 2 hour tutorials will bring it into line with other graduate units. The current tutorial exercises can easily - by simply allowing a little more discussion and exploration time for the students - be extended without any real work - to productively fill 2 hours.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This unit is part of the Business intelligence professional track. It is available as an elective unit in all FIT masters and the Master of Business (IT Management).

Business Intelligence is a significant and growing area of the information technology industry. Content in the unit is derived from core research undertaken within the Monash Centre for Decision Support and Enterprise Systems Research (CDSESR).

At the completion of this unit students will:

• understand the scope and application of OLAP technology and business intelligence systems;
• have knowledge of the major approaches to the development of business intelligence and reporting systems;
• be able to design simple multi-dimensional databases;
• be able to develop a simple business intelligence system using an OLAP tool;
• be able to develop a simple reporting system;
• be able to communicate and foster realistic expectations of the role of OLAP technology and business intelligence systems in management and decision support.

This unit is intended to provide students with a framework for understanding business intelligence reporting systems with particular focus on the evolutionary process of developing an OLAP-based business intelligence system.
