FIT5046 is one of the core units for the Master of Information Technology degree.

09 Feb 2011 - This change is a change to assessment weights to have a more balanced assessment with equal weight for theory and practical components. I strongly believe this is a sound change for the unit and the student's learning. The change is to be effective from Sem 1, 2011.

08 Feb 2012 - The change is a minor amendment to the practical assessment part of this subject. In the past a total of 50% practical work was divided into 10% tutorial work and a 40% programming assignment. This has now been changed to 2 practical assignments worth 20% and 30% each. The change is to be effective from Sem 1, 2012.

17 Jul 2013 - Amending unit prerequisites and knowledge prerequisites. Effective Semester 1 2014.

The unit is one of the discipline core units for the new Master of IT program effective from 2014. The change is to be effective from Sem 2, 2014.

21/10/2014 - Amended prerequisite requirements by adding 2015, FIT9xxx version of 2014, FIT5xxx foundation units. Approved at GPC 4/14 (Item 6.2).

19/06/2015 - Amended prerequisite knowledge by adding advanced programming skills, knowledge of java and SQL because these skills/knowledge are required to understand the unit topics, complete tutorial exercises and assessment tasks.

2/11/15 - Added 'no prerequisites' required for MNS to accommodate changes made to 2015 version of the MNS course structure. Effective Semester 1, 2016.

10/02/16 - As per action item, GPC 5/15, Item 8.10 Minor unit amendments, I have removed reference to MNS under the 'no prerequisites required' statement in the pre-requisites field. Effective Semester 1, 2016.

6/09/2016 - 100% in-semester assessment changed to 50% in-semester and 50% exam. This change is to improve the unit, and addressing the comments made in the last BoE meeting and the action sheet suggested: "review assessment regime of the unit".

27/09/2016 - Admin: updated how long the exam would be (3hrs) on advice from the CE.

7/12/2016 - 3 hours exam was changed to 2 hours because of new changes and 30 minutes reading and noting time was added (this is for S1 2017)

20/12/2017 - 2 hours exam and 30 minutes reading and noting time was changed to 2 hours exam time and 10 minutes reading time

5/10/2018: Update to prerequisites to allow Software engineering students to enrol as an approved elective. Effective 2019.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

18/10/2019: Updating the prerequisites. FIT9134 and FIT9135 are in the process of being disestablished, with new foundation unit FIT9137 introduced. For implementation semester 1, 2020.

11/11/2019: FEC 5/19 approved changes to prerequisites entered 18/10. Also approved was the additional removal of prerequisite knowledge clause, as programming (Java) is covered in FIT9131. Effective 2020.

24/09/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

9/02/2021 CE : the resources (software) updated according to the current software used

9/02/2021 CE : synopsis updated to reflect the current updates to the unit where the focus is mainly on Android programming and old topics like internet mobility are removed

This is one of four core units in the Distributed Mobile Systems Specialisation in the Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT) and an elective for all FIT Masters. This unit replaces CSE5501. It aims to address important issues of mobile and distributed computing systems and networks. It forms an essential component of strategic curriculum of the Faculty in technology and computer science-oriented fields.

This is one of the discipline core units for the Master of Information Technology (MIT) to be offered in 2014. Its key objectives are the same as mentioned in the previous paragraph.

At the completion of this unit students will:

• identify and describe different approaches and methods for building distributed and mobile computing systems;

• evaluate several models and approaches and select suitable mobile computing solution to a particular case;

• propose and develop a mobile or distributed system that is appropriate to a problem domain;

• identify the current research directions in the field and their impacts.

This unit provides a high level coverage of mobile and distributed computing. It will focus on the underlying concepts and standards of mobile computing. Students will learn techniques to design and develop mobile applications. The unit will also provide students with an understanding of current mobile and distributed technologies such as web services, Internet of Things, context-aware computing, location-awareness, wireless sensor networks and current research trends.
