This unit is one of four core units in the Internet and Web Development Specialisation in the Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). It is available as an elective for all FIT Masters.

The unit deals with advanced Java technologies in the multimedia and enterprise application development context on the web. The unit provides the students an option to pursue advanced Java topics and to learn how to develop multimedia and enterprise applications on the web.

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to::

• analyse and critique enterprise software architecture on the web;
• design, construct and publish enterprise applications using the Java programming language;
• assess various advanced Java technologies used to build web applications for the enterprise and construct enterprise applications using advanced Java technologies;
• apply, analyse and critique the use of advanced Java libraries and frameworks in building a medium-size web application for the enterprise.

This unit provides students with an understanding of the design and development of systems that support the large enterprise in a web-based environment. Students will learn of the theoretical issues that need to be considered by the enterprise and how they can affect the development of the enterprise application. A number of techniques will be introduced as the technological means to build such an application with specific emphasis on the Java EE technology.

You will need access to:

• Java
• NetBeans IDE with Java EE support and Glassfish application server
• You may also need access to other IDE with Java EE and Spring support such as IntelliJ or Eclipse.

This software is freely available online to download and also be available in University computer labs. Appropriate download resources will be made accessible via Moodle.
