This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This unit was updated June 2012 to include an exam component in order to better assess student understanding of theoretical foundations of the unit, effective in Semester 1 of 2013.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:18pm)

This is an optional unit in the Security Specialisation in the Master of Information Technology (MIT) and the Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). It is also available as an elective in all FIT Masters. This unit represents one of the areas of specialisation in net-centric computing. It addresses advanced concepts in networking technology for flexibly and efficiently securing e-Commerce systems. The unit aims to produce a pool of graduates capable of building, managing, and extending advanced networks for business use. It enables students to: understand basic concepts in virtual private networks (VPN); understand some of the commonly used VPN architectures; and establish VPNs for practical use.

Layered structure of networks, security threats in an open network environment, and basic security. Detailed exposition of major tools and protocols used in VPNs, including firewalls, IPSec, Internet Security Association and Key Management Protocol (ISAKMP), Internet Key Exchange (IKE), Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and Point-to-Point Tunnelling Protocol (PPTP), Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol (L2TP), Terminal Access Control Access Control System (TACACS), Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), and SOCKS. Exposition of principles and methodologies for the design and implementation of Intranets and Extranets using VPNs.
