FIT5024 is an elective unit introduced for FIT postgraduate programs. This is a first generation entry for this unit in the re-structure of FIT postgraduate programs. This unit is replacing existing GCO5828 unit.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This unit provides students with an opportunity to study a specialised field in IT in the Faculty's Masters program. It is a fifth level elective unit in the Masters programs, offering students the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to solve real-world data mining problems. The knowledge and skills acquired enable students to be competitive and informed in their further study or future employment.

At the completion of this unit, students will have:

• knowledge of the motivation and the need for data mining;
• knowledge of characteristics of major components of the data mining process;
• knowledge of the basic principles of methods and operations for data mining;
• knowledge of case studies to bridge the connection between hands-on experience and real-world applications;
• knowledge of key and emerging application areas;
• skills in using data mining tools to solve data mining problems;
• understanding of current major research issues.
