FIT4146 Emergent technologies and interfaces (13 Sep 2011, 4:00pm) [ETI (13 Sep 2011, 4:00pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (23 Sep 2011, 3:18pm)

This unit is intended to form an elective for students enrolled in the Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT) coursework degree.

Reasons for Change (11 Apr 2014, 4:24pm)

04/2014 - Updated Objectives to be consistent with expected Learning Outcomes format

20/2/2012 Added FIT3146 as a prohibition because FIT4146 is a 4th year level equivalent of FIT3146. Change to take effect from Semester 1, 2012.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (19 Sep 2011, 10:37am)

This unit will allow students to research cutting edge developments in information technology. The unit will place the technical skills gained in other units into a theoretical context and allow the students to gain the skills needed to adapt to the rapidly changing information technology environment. A learning contract will be developed for each student to allow them to demonstrate the application of their research to a practical domain in the field of information technology. An additional benefit of the unit is the opportunity to introduce students to research topics in the information technology field and to explore the possibilities for further research in Research Masters and PhD programs.

Objectives

Objectives (11 Apr 2014, 4:24pm)

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • Locate and critically evaluate information on current research in the field of information technology as it relates to such themes as Human Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous Computing, Social Computing, and Entertainment
  • Critically evaluate the impact of rapid changes in information technology on society, highlighting the pervasive and expanding range of areas on which information technology is impacting
  • Synthesise academic literature to present cohesive argument relating to the impact of new information technology on society
  • Communicate results of investigation to peers effectively through written and oral presentations, while correctly acknowledging and referencing source material
  • Apply theoretical understanding of emergent technologies to a practical project that demonstrates innovative exploration of new information technologies in areas such as Human Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous Computing, Social Computing, and Entertainment.
