The Graduate Diploma of Computing and the Masters of Applied Information Technology have been reviewed and restructured jointly by all schools involved in teaching it. The changes have been designed to ensure smoother movement of students between the Graduate Diploma of Computing and the MAIT. This unit is being introduced/modified for this revised program and will replace an existing unit, GCO4831, which bears the same unit name.

The reason for introducing this unit as an elective unit is to allow students in MAIT a wider range of the units and offer them a unit that covers information security in details. In this unit, students will gain knowledge about OSI security architecture, cryptography techniques, network and system security, wireless security, intrusion detection and be able to gain expertise in network management from security viewpoint.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This unit allows Masters level students to enhance their knowledge in network management by being able to design systems with strong security consideration. Students will be able to play their role as designers, developers, security consultants and managers successfully. This unit will also prepare students for what to expect in the industry in the network security field. This unit will be taught to OCL students.

Building systems and designing networks with strong security focus are currently the demand of computing industry, which makes such unit an essential part of IT education.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

• describe OSI security architecture;
• describe common security standards and protocols for network security applications, e.g., electronic mail, web and network management;
• understand common information risks and requirements;
• explain the operation and algorithms of private and public-key encryption techniques;
• describe the concepts and techniques for digital signatures, authentication and non-repudiation;
• understand wireless security protocols;
• understand privacy and ethical issues;
• appreciate the need for the digital certificates and public key infrastructure;
• appreciate the importance of system security against intruders and malicious software using firewalls;
• appreciate the relevance of privacy and ethic issues to organisations and individuals;
• apply simple security configurations to PC based applications e.g. email, Internet, computer administration;
• design information systems with security compliance.
