FIT3172 Sonics is a core unit in the redesigned Multimedia Development Extended Major. It is also makes up one of the four units in the Games Design Minor.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (04 Sep 2015, 09:31am)

While most units in the Games Dev. and Multimedia Dev. majors concern creation of visual systems, models and graphics, this unit underscores the importance of sound in creative computing practice. FIT3172 Sonics focuses on the capture, editing and creation/generation of digital sounds and soundscapes for virtual reality environments and games. Students will gain an understanding of the physical and acoustic properties of digital sounds, their communicative capacities, and learn how to layer, manipulate, synthesize and adaptively code digital sound waveforms. In their assignments, students will apply this understanding in the design and creative production of a soundscapes, soundtracks and the sound design of immersive environments.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. explain digital representations of sound and its physical and acoustic properties;
  2. implement sound design principles in digital sound recording, editing and synthesis;
  3. construct and create soundscapes and sound tracks;
  4. design and develop immersive, dynamic and adaptive soundscapes.

FIT3172 Sonics focuses on the capture, editing and creation/generation of digital sounds and soundscapes for virtual reality environments and games. Students will gain an understanding of the physical and acoustic properties of digital sounds, their communicative capacities, and learn how to layer, manipulate, synthesise and adaptively code digital sound waveforms. Assessment Summary (03 Feb 2020, 1:48pm)

In-semester assessment: 100%

The main assessment consists of three assignments worth 20%, 20% and 30%. These assignments correspond to the grouping of weekly topics into four-week blocks. In lieu of an exam, there will be three in studio tests, each worth 10% following each assignment. These will assess the students' knowledge of the assignment material.

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • One hour lecture
  • Three hour tutorial
  • (b.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • A minimum of 8 hours of personal study in order to satisfy the reading, tutorial and assignment expectations.
