Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (11 Jun 2018, 8:18pm)

FIT3160 is a core unit in the Mobile Systems major. Mobile devices have outgrown the PC market, while the knowledge and skills required to understand mobiles differ extensively enough to warrant a unit that specializes in this domain. This unit will be focus on data management for mobile devices. Handling of data within the mobile context differs from how it is managed in the traditional client-server arena.

Objectives

Objectives (21 Jun 2018, 09:22am)

  1. Differentiate between mobile data and traditional stationery databases
  2. Explain the concepts required for efficient persistent and client-side data management
  3. Design and implement mobile databases that apply the principles of mobile storage mechanisms, mobile transaction management, and recovery
  4. Demonstrate the use and impact of multi-source data synchronisation, data caching and invalidation, and data consistency and integrity in mobile data management
  5. Apply push, pull and broadcast data techniques to the design and evaluation of mobile databases

Mode (11 Jun 2018, 8:29pm)

On-campus

Special teaching arrangements (21 Sep 2020, 12:09pm)

The teaching approach for this unit will allow students to have an initial encounter with information via the prescribed materials for pre-reading, discuss, explore and be quizzed during subsequent classes and lab workshops. This will enable the students to put the knowledge that has been acquired into into practice in a hands-on laboratory environment.
