Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

FIT3149 Network Administration - disestablished (07 Dec 2017, 12:03pm) [Network Admin (08 Aug 2010, 11:08pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (08 Aug 2010, 11:09pm)

This unit was developed as a part of the faculty review of the BITS in 2010. It is a key unit in the network-centric track within the new BITS ICT major.

Reasons for Change (07 Dec 2017, 12:03pm)

While the previous Network Administration unit of the Net-Centric major of BITS was at the second year level, it was decided by the people designing the new ICT major that this can move up to the third year level. One reason is because the prerequisite, Data Communications and Networks, went from the common core FIT1005 to the second year unit of the same name on unit code FIT2008 (as at 2010).

30/11/2015: Updated objectives to learning outcomes for AQF compliance as approved at UGPC 5/15 (Item 9.1).

07/12/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (05 Aug 2010, 9:25pm)

This is a key unit of the Network-centric track of the ICT major of the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) programme.

This unit is dependent on knowledge provided by core unit study of networks and data communications (or equivalent) and provides practical knowledge and experience that supports other units, both within and outside the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) major where network concepts are relevant.

The undergraduate degrees aim to provide students with a deep understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of information technology, and this unit supports that aim by providing knowledge and skills in administration of networks and networked applications.

Objectives

Objectives (30 Nov 2015, 12:55pm)

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. describe the role of a network administrator;
  2. configure and manage common network infrastructure protocols, including DHCP, DNS, LDAP, SMTP, HTTP and others;
  3. explain standards relevant to network management systems, including ASN.1, SNMP, SMI/MIB, RMON, DMTF/DMI, and others;
  4. describe standards-based models and practices in fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security management of networks;
  5. evaluate a range of hardware and software tools for network administration;
  6. install, configure and manage a typical network application services.
