This unit was developed as part of the restructure of the BITS carried out as part of the IT faculty review in 2010. It is a level 3 elective unit in the Enterprise Information Management major of the BITS.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (06 Aug 2010, 2:07pm)

The purpose of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of the tasks and the main issues associated with the management of data and electronic records in modern organizations. It will provide students with a grounding in the key concepts and theories of data management and demonstrate how they are put into practice in organizations.

The unit will build on the basic concepts of organizations, information and the fundamental data storage and retrieval technologies which are studied in the core units earlier in the major. Much of the content will come from existing units which were taught in the IM major of the previous version of the BITS, particularly FIT3072

On the completion of this unit, students will:

  • understand the purpose of the data management function and recognise its importance for organizations;
  • know and understand some of the key organizational data management tasks and the issues associated with them;
  • understand the impacts of technological change on the data management function and the role of data management professionals;
  • recognise and and be able to analyse the risks and liabilities which must be addressed by organizational data management strategies;
  • understand the importance of a structured and systematic approach to the development and implementation of of data management strategies and procedures
  • be able to critically evaluate a proposed data management solution for a given organizational situation;
  • be able to apply appropriate techniques and standards in the development of strategies and procedures to address a typical organizational data management need;

    This unit provides students with an understanding of the tasks and the main issues associated with the management of data and electronic records in modern organizations. The management of business records has always been an important function in any large organization, but the use of digital technologies has added greatly to the scope and complexity of the task, and to the number and diversity of issues which must be addressed. The unit will examine some of the key areas in which these changes have affected the data management function in organizations. This will be used as a basis for explaining the nature of specialist work in this field and the professional roles and responsibilities associated with it.
