The current global business environment continues to create challenges for organisations and their IT managers in response to global warming/climate change threats to environment. Enterprises now face increasing pressure to balance short and long-term needs for economic, social and environmental sustainability. Introduction of this unit to the degree ensures that students will have a broader perspective of IT besides economic factors. This is an elective offered by the Faculty of IT.

FIT13137 is a third year undergraduate elective for FIT students. Its key objectives are to prepare students so that they will:

Understand the role of IT in an organsation's economic, social and environmental sustainability Understand the practices and initiatives for sustainability Understand sustainability indicators, carbon managment and emerging issues of IT and organisational sustainability.

The objective of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of why, what and how to implement ICT to reduce carbon emission with the aid of soft and hard IT tools. On completion, students should be able to:

-Discuss the economic, social and environmental sustainability challenges;

-Describe practices and initiatives for sustainability;

-Describe sustainability indicators and their performance management

-Use carbon management software to manage carbon emissions

-Describe the emerging issues of IT and organisational sustainability

Developed knowledge and understanding that enable students to:

-adopt a problem-solving approach;

-recognise the importance of IT and sustainability;

-appreciate the challenges of the global business environment;

-accept the code of professional conduct and practice;

-act in accordance with best practice, industry standards and professional ethics.

This unit provides an understanding of how IT can be used, as an enabler technology to provide smart solutions for organisations with both the short and long-term needs for economic, social and environmental sustainability.

This unit will be delivered via one two-hour lecture. Lecturers may go through specific examples, give demonstrations and present slides that contain theoretical concepts. In tutorials students will discuss in-depth fundamental and interesting aspects about the unit, which will help them complete, their tutorial work. The tutorials are particularly useful in helping students consolidate concepts and practise their problem solving skills.
