Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This unit is a third year elective unit in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems designed for students enrolled in the Multimedia major. This third year unit provides students with an opportunity to synthesise and apply their knowledge and skills gained in other units as they develop commercial solutions for industry. All project work and deadlines will be client-driven and delivered to commercial quality standards, and of sufficient complexity to stretch the student's ability. Given the prerequisites for this unit students should be able to be involved in more complex/demanding projects.

Reasons for Introduction (19 Apr 2010, 11:19am)

FIT3135 has been introduced to replace MMS3901 in keeping with the Faculty unit coding policy.

Reasons for Change (07 Dec 2017, 12:11pm)

Removed references to old degree structure and discontinued prohibition units. Clarified assessment policy by grouping assessment items. Change to be implemented 2011.

19/4/10 Included reference to old MMS3901 course and included information that FIT3135 is identical but has been introduced to adhere to Faculty unit coding policy.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • effectively communicate and negotiate project expectations and tasks with the client
  • plan and manage the workload in a multimedia systems project that is specified by an external client
  • apply ethical and professional practices in a real-world project environment

    Students will work 12 hours per week for a 15 week period (or the summer equivalent) at a commercial multimedia studio. There under the joint supervision of an industry sponsor and their lecturer, students will undertake a portfolio of commercial projects for business, government, university, or non-government organisations. All projects will be driven by client requirements and timetables. Work will be supervised and subject to formal peer review by unit participants and formal review by peers and an academic lecturer.

    Assessment

    Students will be assessed by a Monash University supervisor in conjunction with the sponsoring organisation.

    As a hurdle requirements, students are required to complete the portfolio submission and presentation portions of the assessment. This requirement is in places as these assessments are the only parts directly contributed by the University supervisor.

    To be eligible for an industry placement, a student must have completed all first year and second year core units of a Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (Multimedia Development or Game Development majors) degree. Application by other students within the Faculty with equivalent standing will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. Students must submit an application, including a folio of their work and undertake an interview with the sponsoring business and Monash University staff as part of a formal selection process.
