FIT3039 Studio project 1 (22 Sep 2015, 3:38pm) [STUDIO PROJ 1 (22 Sep 2015, 3:38pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (13 Apr 2005, 3:48pm)

Following the 2004 Review of the Faculty of Information Technology this unit forms part of the Multimedia major established within the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems degree.

Reasons for Change (18 Sep 2020, 12:02pm)

September 2012: Added FIT1040 as an alternative prerequisite to FIT1002 for 2013. Approved by CE (Mark Power).

This unit has been updated to reflect new offering as part of the Games Development major at Caulfield. No major changes have been made, some entries have been slightly adjusted to reflect the extra diversity in the unit as a result of the inclusion of games development projects. Explicit mention to games development is also made in some places.

Proposed change should be implemented for Semester 1, 2010 as the unit will be offered at Caulfield then.

October, 2011: Change of prerequisites to align unit with new multimedia development and games development structures. Proposed change should be implemented for semester 1 2011.

December, 2011

PreReqs modified to Facilitate student enrollment through WES. The prerequisite subject FIT2003 has replaced FIT1003 and FIT2035. Students who had completed the subject FIT1003 were excluded from enrolling in FIT3039.

On advice from Renee Bartholmoeusz it is requested that this change be actioned for semester 1,2012.

This modification has been made after consulting with Lindsay Smith.

January, 2012

Modified Assessment to include a hurdle requirement to comply with Faculty policy.

Updated contact person details.

May 2012

Changed workload/special requirements information. some software will only run in K110 as it needs a 64 bit operating system. Note that this has already been fixed in the semester 2 timetable in MUTTS

October 2012

Changed prerequisites to reflect FIT offerings in Berwick Business and Berwick Education degrees.

May2013

modified Workload/SpecialRequirements to reflect labs with required hardware/software configurations

November 2013

modified Workload/SpecialRequirements to reflect system requirements for this unit.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (27 Nov 2009, 1:49pm)

This unit (and its counterpart Studio 2) aims to build on the students' knowledge of basic concepts from previous years, by introducing them to more advanced tools for multimedia systems and games development. It also aims to further develop students' understanding of the multimedia and games development process and the tools and techniques used to manage and control it.

The sequence content will be integrated closely with that of the other core units in the degree programs. This first unit concentrates on the initial systems design phase and the development of a system prototype. This unit allows students to demonstrate the skills that they have gained in FIT1012, FIT2012, FIT2015, FIT2016, FIT2026, and/or FIT2049 in a large scale multimedia or games project.

Objectives

Objectives (14 Sep 2015, 2:53pm)

  1. develop a project management plan for delivering a multimedia/game application or product;
  2. create a game/multimedia application or product OR Create a working prototype of a game/multimedia application or product;
  3. work collaboratively in a team environment;
  4. communicate project progress to stakeholders;

Synopsis (27 Nov 2009, 2:01pm)

The principal development process focus of the unit will be on the social, legal and business context in which multimedia and games development companies must operate. Students will work actively in teams on the development of a multimedia or games application or exhibit. Project teams will use project planning/management skills, and design and build a prototype of the project using appropriate software processes and methodologies. Students will integrate multimedia, programming and technical knowledge in the development process. Requirements are fulfilled by the team producing an identified set of deliverables. The team must ensure that each deliverable is completed on schedule.

Prescribed Reading (for new units) (18 Sep 2020, 12:01pm)

There are no specific software requirements for this unit due to the varying nature of the projects chosen. After choosing your project you will be required to use the most appropriate development software.

Teaching Methods

Mode (13 Apr 2005, 4:50pm)

On-campus

Special teaching arrangements (18 Sep 2020, 12:03pm)

This unit is a capstone class where students work on self-directed projects. As such, the class will be run as a single 4 hour studio each week.

To enable students to have access to the skills of all teaching staff, all studio classes need to be scheduled at the same time and in close proximity to each other (ideally at the same time and in adjacent rooms)

A broad open class approach is used to facilitate collaboration and a peer based learning approach between students

Assessment
