This FIT3021 is third level elective unit introduced in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems degree offered at Gippsland in the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) from 2006.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:14pm)

The unit is designed to examine the intricacies of the information technology infrastructure requirements necessary for effective, efficient and secure practice of electronic commerce. This unit is similar to GCO3601 (Infrastructure for Electronic Commerce).

Globalised business practices, with the advent of electronic commerce, demand developing and maintaining sophisticated technologies and standards in an ever increasing web-oriented society. A thorough understanding of the best practice in electronic commerce requires a detailed examination of the new and emerging infrastructure processes and technologies and an understanding of standards and benchmarks for them.

Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:14pm)

This unit aims to develop and extend students understanding and knowledge about the information technology infrastructure that supports and enables modern electronic commerce systems. This infrastructure includes communication networks (wireline and wireless), the Internet, payment mechanisms, and a range of enabling technologies, such as XML, server technologies, software agents, various emerging protocols and standards. Applications and recent developments in such enabling technologies including mobile commerce are explored. The unit approaches some infrastructure issues from the perspective of security in electronic commerce, focussing on real and potential security problems and the techniques for addressing them. Privacy and legal issues concerning electronic commerce are discussed.
