Throughout their degree students study a number of subjects which provide them with skills and theoretical knowledge in a variety of areas. This unit requires students to draw upon many of these previously attained skill areas.

Students will have the opportunity to experience working in a small project team of approximately four students and, under the direction of a supervisor, develop a distributed information system or network solution in response to a client's requirements. During the project lifecycle students will plan, monitor and control the course of the project throughout all the phases, including implementation. This will require students to use the skills gained during their course, such as, written and oral communication, research, critical thought and analysis, problem solving and teamwork.

Each team is expected to follow well-defined guidelines in regard to ethical work practices, project management and quality assurance techniques with defined roles for each team member.

Reasons for Change (13 Apr 2005, 11:33am)

This unit was previously called CPE3300 Industrial Experience Project Part II and was in the Bachelor of Network Computing. The unit has been changed to fit in the with faculty requirements for the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems.

Role of Unit (05 Jun 2006, 09:19am)

This is a core unit of the Net-centric, Internet Systems and Security majors for the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems.

Relationship of Unit (03 May 2005, 2:23pm)

Students must complete this unit in the semester immediately following the semester in which they completed FIT3016. Both FIT3016 and FIT3017 must be completed on the same industry project (with the same client) and run across 2 consecutive semesters.

Relevance of Unit (03 May 2005, 2:23pm)

Industry relevance is considered a key objective of the Bachelor of Network Computing. The Industrial Experience Project prepares students for entry into the workforce.

Objectives

Knowledge and Understanding (Cognitive Domain Objectives) (03 May 2005, 2:52pm)

On the successful completion of this unit students should gain some practical experience on an IT project for an industrial client and should be able to:

Control system development through suitable project management tools. This will involve the identification of necessary tasks in the development, and the estimation of task duration and scheduling of these tasks.

Show managerial judgement over the development process.

Perform all technical tasks in a professional and competent manner.

Work effectively, ethically and co-operatively within a team environment.

This subject involves students working as part of a project team on an industry project. The teaching modes used throughout the semester include:

Reviews - All major deliverables/milestones produced throughout the project are reviewed by a panel of industry and academic personnel.

Meetings - Weekly meetings are held with an allocated group supervisor and fortnightly (approx) meeting are held with the team's industry client.

Presentations - Final project presentations are performed in front of peers and supervisors.

Students are taught through: the distribution of templates for all major project deliverables, weekly meetings with supervisors (who provide guidance on the content of deliverables, project management and development techniques), regular reviews by industry experts and academic staff of all major deliverables and system components.

Laboratory Requirements (03 May 2005, 2:31pm)

An industrial experience laboratory is provided by the Peninsula School of Information Technology for students to develop project deliverables, load and test systems, participate in reviews and hold meetings.

Software Requirements (21 Oct 2005, 1:04pm)

Basic software requirements are provided by the School of Network Computing from current resources. Specialist software for individual projects is provided by the project client.

Several copies of the recommended reading texts should be held in the library.
