FIT3001 Advanced 3D - disestablished (30 Nov 2017, 3:14pm) [ADVANCED3D (06 Aug 2010, 3:15pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (06 Aug 2010, 2:49pm)

Following the 2010 Review of the Faculty of Information Technology this unit forms part of the new Multimedia Development major established within the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems degree.

Reasons for Change (30 Nov 2017, 3:14pm)

May 2014 - Objectives updated to learning outcomes for AQF compliance.

This unit has been renamed and updated to better suit the overall learning objectives of the new Multimedia Development major. It aligns with the content of the other units in the new major and the revised Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems degree.

July 2015 - Proposal made for moving to 1 hour lecture and 3 hour tutorial/lab

This proposal has been made to align Advanced 3D with with its prerequisite Foundations of 3D, further reasons for this proposal are offered below.

05/08/2015 - Admin: adding semester of implementation - Sem 1, 2016. Also numbered learning outcomes.

30/11/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (06 Aug 2010, 4:47pm)

This unit builds upon the skills, techniques and theory introduced in FIT1033 Foundations of 3D towards an emphasis on 3D character design and modelling for animation. Students will be introduced to advanced techniques for character detailing (modelling and texturing) and character animation (rigging, binding and animation). The theoretical and practical considerations contributing to the conceptualisation, creation and preparation of 3D characters for animation sequences will constitute a key focus of this unit. This unit also provides knowledge and skills which the student can apply within their third year studio project/s (FIT3039/3040).

Objectives

Objectives (05 Aug 2015, 10:57am)

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Research, evaluate and implement complex 3D geometry, 3D texturing and 3D animation techniques
  2. Explain the principles of 3D animation theory and the development of computer generated 3D characters
  3. Design, model and texture original and geometrically efficient 3D characters
  4. Prepare (rig and bind) 3D characters for animation
  5. Render images of 3D characters and objects into animated sequences

Workloads

Workload Requirements (14 Jul 2015, 2:52pm)

I would like to propose that the contact hours for FIT3001 Advanced 3D be amended from 2 hour lectures and 2 hour tutorials/labs to a 1 hour lecture and 3 hours of tutorials/labs.

There are several reasons for changing the lecture time allocation from 2 hours to 1 hour and the tutorial/lab allocation from 2 hours to 3 hours.

The first is that I believe a 2 hour lecture is a waste of time in a unit where the practicality and experience of making 3D objects is as important as the theory. Invariably students doze off or begin playing with their phones after 1.5 hour in the lecture. It is much easier to engage student interest in punchier 1 hour timeframe.

The 3 hours of tutorials/labs I am proposing would be split into 1 hour tutorial and 2 hour labs in terms paying sessional tutors.

Most importantly, students are not getting enough time inside 2 hours with their tutors to ask questions and learn to manipulate and manage the 3D medium in the tutorials. A three hour slot (divided 1 hour tutorial, 2 hours lab) would be very beneficial to student/tutor engagement in class exercises, problem solved and discussion

In Advanced 3D and Foundations of 3D, I have for some years run three in tutorial tests during semester of 10% each, each lasting an hour. In lieu of an exam, these tests are important in verifying that students are in fact submitting their own assignment work (the practice for these tests lie in doing the assignments). However, over a semester, these tests erode the 2 hours worth of time that students have to engage with the material, their peers and their tutors

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students: One hour lecture and One 3-hour tutorial/laboratory

(b.) Additional requirements (all students): A minimum of 2-3 hours of personal study per one hour of contact time in order to satisfy research and assignment expectations.

Additional/Special Timetabling Requirements (03 Feb 2011, 11:51am)
