FIT2069 is core in BSE. It was introduced as part of the 2010 BSE restructure and will be part of the revised degree roll out of level 2 units for 2011. Previously this degree had a core unit FIT2022, which covered a portion of the material in FIT2069. Engineers Australia requires this material for BSE accreditation.

On 21/02/2014 - Align Monatar with previous component hurdle practice, followed to ensure that students attend all assessed through semester activities. This is necessary as there is an unusually high dependency, through semester, on content in previous parts of the unit.

On 24/11/2011 - Based on extensive student feedback in Sem 1 2011 more tutorial time was requested. Fortnightly tutorials are now 2 hours (up from one hour). Effective semester 1, 2012.

The previous version (exclusion with FIT2022) makes it impossible for pre-2010 students to take FIT3069 and thus excludes them from taking FIT3141.

The previous version was a mistake and the change needs to take effect immediately.

28/4/2021 - Unit disestablished at FEC 2/21 Item 6.2

This is a second year level core unit in BSE and elective in BCS and BCS dual majors. It covers topics from the areas of computer architecture.

This unit replaces components of FIT2022 Computer Systems II dealing with computer architecture topics, and adds necessary additional material to support FIT2070 Operating Systems, FIT3142 Distributed Computing, and FIT3143 Parallel Computing.

All BSE graduates require a solid and more detailed technical knowledge of computer architectures than that required by a more generalist IT degree. BCS graduates undertaking a computer systems specialisation, including those undertaking a specialisation in computer science via other degrees, also require this unit.

The material contained in FIT2069 was previously spread over CSE1303 and CSE2324, and later partly incorporated in FIT2022. The 2009 revision of the common core sees FIT1001 and FIT1005 compressed into a single level 1 unit, further reducing coverage of materials previously in CSE1301. The content of FIT2069 therefore addresses these curriculum changes.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

• analyse simple logic circuits;
• explain and analyse key processor components;
• explain and analyse computer organisation;
• write and debug simple assembly language programs;
• use simulator programs to model computer system components.

This unit covers the internal mechanism of computers and how they are organised and programmed. Topics include combinatorial and sequential logic, Boolean Algebra, Karnaugh maps, counters, ripple adders, tree adders, memory/addressing, busses, speed, DMA, data representation, machine arithmetic, microprogramming, caches and cache architectures, virtual memory and translation look-aside buffers, vectored interrupts, polled interrupts, pipelined architecture, superscalar architecture, data dependency, hazards, CISC, RISC, VLIW machine architectures.
