30/11/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.

September 2012: Added FIT1040 as an alternative prerequisite to FIT1002 for 2013. Approved by CE (Gour Karmakar) via email 11/09/2012.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:13pm)

This is a core unit for Gippsland Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) students. The unit is core for all students enrolled in both Applications Development and Networks and Business Systems majors of the BITS. It aims to provide students with: knowledge of mark-up languages and scripting languages, and skill in creating applications using these; an understanding of the basic mechanisms of client server architecture; a demonstration of the ability to develop Internet based applications; and a sound understanding of the fundamental principles of web service strategies.

This unit is similar to GCO2811 Commercial Programming, and builds on concepts taught in FIT1004 Database. It allows students to continue this study through to electives such as, FIT3011 Enterprise Programming. It also provides skills, which students may use in FIT3025 IT Project.

Programming for commercial applications has become heavily web oriented, therefore to ensure that students are able to meet industry needs when they graduate, they must be exposed to this content during their studies.
