Objectives

At the completion of this unit students will have a theoretical and conceptual understanding of:

C1 the purpose and objectives of problem solving in an organizational context, and the tasks which are required to carry it out

C2 a range of problem solving techniques relevant to the identification, definition, representation and addressing of information problems that arise in an organizational context

C3 the key issues involved in addressing information problems that arise in an organizational context

C4 the differences in problem solving techniques and approaches at individual, group and organizational levels

C5 the importance of the identification and definition phases in the problem solving process

C6 the strengths and weaknesses of basic techniques relevant to the identification, definition, representation and addressing of information problems that arise in an organizational context

C7 the place of communication and interpersonal skills in addressing information problems that arise in an organizational context

C8 the role of information technology in supporting the resolution of organizational problems.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to

A1 Recognise the value of a systematic, critical and reflective approach to problem solving as it applies to information systems in an organizational context

A2 Recognise the ethical and political consequences that may accompany the identification, definition, representation and addressing of information problems that arise in an organizational context

A3 Appreciate the subjective nature of problem interpretation by the organizational stakeholders and the would-be problem solvers which may lead to different interpretations.

At the completion of this unitstudents will be able to

P1 evaluate the organizational context of problems in a critical manner, and to identify likely methods for addressing those problems

P2 deploy tools and techniques relevant to the identification, definition, representation and addressing of information problems that arise in an organizational context.

This unit will examine the roles IT can play in the development of solutions to organizational information problems. Students will be encouraged to explore a wide range of problem solving techniques and technologies and to understand how to adapt them to particular organizational contexts.
