This unit was developed as part of the Bachelor of Information Technology implementation in 2015. It is a core unit in the Software Development major.

Reasons for Change (17 Sep 2020, 10:27am)

12/06/2017: Admin - updating location of offering to reflect actual campus offerings at the ADE's request.

Introduced for course architecture programs. Effective semester 1/2016

7/10/15 - due to an oversight, the work contact hours were changed by the CE from 2 hour lecture + 2 hour labs to 1 hour seminar + 3 hour studio. Effective Semester 1, 2016

7/8/17 - Exam duration changed to 2 hours to conform with University guidelines

19/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

10/02/2020: Adding reason for change on behalf of CE. Updating the assessment weighting from 50/50 to 40/60. Reason: In response to student feedback, FIT1050 is being redeveloped to focus on a more practical approach, both in unit content and assessment.

7/4/20: Admin - reverting class types (workload) back to lectures/labs. Oversight dated 7/10/15 was only changed back in the Handbook, not Monatar. Effective S1, 2020.

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA1050 effective Semester 1, 2021. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (02 Sep 2015, 11:52am)

As a core unit in the Software Development major, this unit aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the World Wide Web and its uses. The unit will examine the following main areas:

  • the history and evolution of the Web
  • the diversity of use of the Web
  • the basic technologies associated with the internet and the world-wide web;
  • the development processes required to build systems which make use of web technologies
  • analysis and design issues and techniques for web-based systems
  • The emphasis throughout the unit will be on providing a broad overview of topics, rather than examining any one topic in great depth. There will be a strong emphasis on practical demonstration of the concepts being studied, and case studies will be used to highlight key aspects of theory.

    At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

    1. name and describe the key technologies upon which the world-wide and web-based applications are based;
    2. describe the strengths and limitations of the technological capabilities associated with the worldwide web and recognise their impacts on different kinds of web-based applications;
    3. explain and compare the range of technical knowledge and development skills required for the development of a variety of different types of web-based applications;
    4. perform some of the basic tasks required in the development of a web-based application;
    5. recognise the importance of a team-based approach to the development of web-based applications.

    The world-wide web is one of the most widely-used platforms for building applications. Although all students can be assumed to be experienced users of the web, very few have any clear understanding of the technologies upon which the web is based, and the way in which these technologies affect web-based applications. This unit aims to give students a sound basic knowledge of the web and a range of issues which may be involved in web application development. It will take a strongly practical focus in examining the technology, design and implementation problems a developer needs to address in developing applications for real-world systems. The diversity of web applications means that there are a wide range of issues which may be relevant to the development of any given web site. The unit will aim to give breadth of coverage of these issues, rather than focusing in depth on any particular development task or any specific type of web application.

    The unit will take a strongly practical focus in examining the technology issues involved, and highlight the key issues which a developer needs to address in developing applications of this kind for real-world systems.

    Lecture and/or tutorials or problem classes, Laboratory-based classes Lectures provide a high-level overview and technical backgrounds to each week's topic while also allowing in-depth exploration of supplementary topics that allow students to consider topics in a broader context.

    Laboratory-based classes allow exploration of topics using variety of activity types including practical exercises and in-class discussion. These sessions also provide opportunities for student to participate in peer-assessment activities
