FIT1040 Digital futures: Adventures in programming - disestablished (28 Apr 2021, 2:57pm) [DIG FUTURE: ADV PROG (14 Sep 2015, 1:46pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (28 Jun 2012, 4:15pm)

FIT1040 is a core unit introduced as part of the common core for first year undergraduates in the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) for 2013. It replaces FIT1002.

Reasons for Change (28 Apr 2021, 2:57pm)

26/05/2014 - Update to learning outcomes for AQF compliance.

New pedagogical insights during the design of the fine structure of the unit have led to minor adjustments of synopsis and learning outcomes.

1/9/2015 - Updated for course architecture programs. Effective semester 1/2016

14/10/2015 Removed FIT1045, FIT1048 and FIT1051 from prohibitions due to system issues. Will try to find an alternative way of handling this process (of allowing students to do FIT1040 prior to the above units, but not after).

15/10/2015 - reverse above change as solution was found to system problems.

18/01/2016 - MC: UnitObjectives, UnitContent/Synopsis, Workload/SpecialRequirements edited to reflect the new Digital Futures offering - discussed with Ann and Caitlin.

20/01/2016 - Admin: fixed typos. Updated CE to current CE.

24/01/2017 MC (CE): modified UnitContent/Synopsis: minor edit UnitContent/Synopsis removed robots, revised applications to make synopsis more relevant to DigFutures ... modified Assessment/Summary: after discussion with Caitlin, modifications to comply with upcoming exam changes in 2017... ... Assessment/Summary revised exam to 50%, 2 hours with 30 minutes reading AND noting time; ... non-exam to include 10% continual assessment incl. peer learning - to be reflected in U/G once Monatar approved. Effective Semester 1, 2017.

30/11/2017 - Updating prohibitions to include the new programming unit.

28/4/2021 - Unit disestablished at FEC 2/21 Item 6.2

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (28 Jun 2012, 4:17pm)

This unit forms part of the common core for first year FIT undergraduate students. Its key objectives are to: develop students' understanding of the computational process; provide students with knowledge and experience in programming and computational problem solving, develop their skills in simple algorithm design and in coding these as computer programs; build a solid foundation for further programming study and provide an understanding of the role/nature of professional programming practice.

Objectives

Objectives (18 Jan 2016, 12:44pm)

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. recognise the relationship between a problem description and program design;
  2. implement problem solving strategies;
  3. construct and test simple computer programs;
  4. analyse and debug existing programs;
  5. recognise the importance of good practices in programming.

Synopsis (24 Jan 2017, 2:19pm)

This unit will provide students with an overview of the fundamentals required to create programs. Students will learn to develop descriptions of algorithms and program logic using pseudocode which will be implemented as working software programs using a visual procedural programming language. The unit will explore a variety of application domains including: computer games, simple applications for business and science, computer generated arts, and computer-based simulations. The topics covered will include the fundamental concepts: data types and structures, basic types of input and output, program control structures, and modular design along with the basics of event-driven programming and objects. These topics will be covered while placing an emphasis on the need to design program code that is easy to maintain, read, test, and is well documented.
