Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (05 Aug 2010, 2:05pm)

Reasons for Change (30 Nov 2017, 12:01pm)

30/11/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (05 Aug 2010, 2:08pm)

This unit is one of the four core units in the Enterprise Information Management major which was introduced as part of the BITS review in 2010. These four core units in the major - FIT1036, FIT1037, FIT2074 and FIT2075 - address fundamental concepts in organizations, information, technology and the development of strategies for information management and systems acquisition and implementation. They aim to provide students with a grounding in the basic concepts and key themes which underly the content of the later units in the major. The units incorporate elements of FIT1003 and the level 1 and level 2 introductory units in the previous IM and IS majors. In place of the narrower discipline-based focus of those units, they blend the approaches of the two disciplines to provide a broader overview of key issues relating to organizational information needs, and the capabilities and limitations of IT-based applications to satisfy them.

This unit introduces students to the basic concepts of organizations, their information needs and the application of IT-based systems to satisfy them. As a level 1 introductory unit, it will focus on providing breadth rather than depth in its coverage of these topics, acting as a gateway to the later units which address them in greater detail. The unit content will be based largely around material previously covered in the units FIT1003, FIT1020, and FIT1021, but this material will be more tightly integrated to link themes and issues previously covered separately under the labels of IS and IM.

    Synopsis (05 Aug 2010, 2:18pm)

This unit examines the nature of the information needs of organizations, groups and individuals, and the ways in which IT-based systems support them. The main focus of the unit will be on organizational needs for IT-based systems and information management, but it will also consider the wider social context for issues relating to information and IT usage. The changing hopes and expectations of what IT and information can offer to assist the enterprise will be a particular focus of attention. This will provide the basis for consideration of the range of roles required of the IT professional in developing and implementing IT-based solutions to information problems.
