FIT1027 provides a general introduction to information management and its constituent parts with particular reference to systems that manage information and to the role of the information management professions in organisations and society. In this unit systems are broadly defined to encompass IM governance and management frameworks, policies, processes and people, as well as hardware, software applications and IM tools.

Students often have difficulty understanding how their program of study is integrated. This unit will provide a grounding in the IM discipline and profession, explaining how IM units relate to each other, to the ICT, project management and industrial experience units in the FIT core, and to relevant units in other majors, especially the IS major, as well as how the role of information management professionals relates to that of other information and ICT professionals. This will provide a basis for them to integrate their studies into an overall understanding of the ICT body of knowledge and related professional areas inclusive of IM.

The introduction of this unit has been postponed due to rationalisation of units in the Faculty. It is no longer part of the BITS (Information Management) core.

The role of this unit is to be one of two primary introductory units for the IM major in the BITS.

This is a first year core unit in the BITS major in Information Management. It incorporates parts of the content of IMS1501 and IMS1502 from course 3323 Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS). It provides a general introduction to information management, systems that manage information, the IM major and its components, and the IM professions, complementing the other introductory unit, FIT1021, which focuses on the raison d'etre of information management - understanding information needs and information use. The unit will also be offered as an elective to BITS students not completing the Information Management major.

FIT1027 is a first year core unit in the BITS major in Information Management. By providing a broad introduction to IM and the IM major, it will explain how the contents of the units in the major relate to each other, where they fit into the big picture of what constitutes IM, how they relate to the FIT core and units in other majors, especially the IS major, and to specialised areas of IM such as KM, Librarianship, Archives and Records.

Through a critical examination of what constitutes information management, the information management profession and information systems as broadly defined, this unit provides a general introduction to the information management discipline and profession, its constituent parts,and relationships with other information and IT disciplines and professions. Pass Requirements:

In order to pass a unit, a student must gain all of the following:

at least 40% of the marks of the examination component: i.e. the final examination and any tests performed under exam conditions, taken as a whole at least 40% of the marks of the assignment component: i.e. the assignment and any other assessment tasks (such as presentations) taken as a whole at least 50% of the total marks for the unit

Where a student gains less than 40% for either the examination or assignment component, the final result for the unit will be no greater than '44-N'.
