CSE5250 Multimedia Retrieval Technologies (28 Sep 2007, 5:09pm) [MRT ]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

Significant growth in the numbers of students in the MIT and MAIT coursework masters degrees has driven demand for the development and delivery of new material through masters level unit offerings. Interest in the algorithms and the technology involved in multimedia data management has increased significantly in both the commercial and research domains. This motivates this proposal for a new unit entitled Multimedia Retrieval Technologies (MRT) which would deal with such issues.Issues related to the delivery of database management related units in CSSE Caulfield are discussed by the (informal) CSSE database special interest group (hereafter DBSIG), members Chris Avram, Maria Indrawan, Christine Mingins, Medahalli Ramakrishna, Robert Redpath, Rod Simpson, Bala Srinivasan, Campbell Wilson and Arkady Zaslavsky. This group has determined that the proposal for this new MRT unit offers also the opportunity to rationalise the database offerings at the 4xxx and 5xxx level, in order to ensure that any possible areas of overlap are eliminated and inactive units deleted. This rationalisation is outlined in summary herein.Separate proposals will be submitted outlining in detail the envisaged changes to the specific units.Rationalisation of Postgraduate Database Offerings:CSE5220 Advanced Topics in Database SystemsThe syllabus for this unit is traditionally varied depending on current developments in the database area and also the research interest of the unit lecturer. However, subject to the approval of the MRT unit, the DBSIG believes this unit could cover topic areas drawn and updated from the currently inactive units CSE4310 (Information Resource Management and Data Administration) and CSE4430 (Database Design and Administration). This could satisfy the need for units dealing with database administration issues and also bring the CSE5220 unit in line with current database issues as befits its title.CSE4310 Information Resource Management and Data Administration(Refer accompanying proposal) This unit last ran in semester 2, 2001 (under the old code of COT4310). This unit could be deleted as part of the rationalisation of CSE5220 described above.CSE4430 Database Design and Administration(Refer accompanying proposal) This unit last ran in semester 2, 1997 (under the old code of COT4430). This unit could be deleted as part of the rationalisation of CSE5220 described above.CSE4700 Formal Methods in Database Systems(Refer accompanying proposal) This unit last ran in semester 1, 1999 (under the old code of COT4700). This unit could be deleted.CSE4704 Formal Methods in Information and Image Retrieval(Refer accompanying proposal) This unit has never run. This unit could be deleted.CSE4500 Query Language and Information Retrieval(Refer accompanying proposal) It will be proposed that the title of this unit be changed to Information Retrieval Systems. This will more accurately reflect the content of the unit (query languages are not a large part of the unit as it is currently delivered). The synopsis for this unit is also to undergo minor changes.Additionally, discussion with Shonali Krishnaswamy from the School of Network Computing took place within the last DBSIG meeting (August 13) concerning the introduction ofCPE5012 Web Database Systems and Technologies. This unit would be run by SNC, and also contribute to the general rationalisation of database subjects at level 5 (accompanying proposal to come from SNC).
