CSE3000 Database Management and Implementation (DISESTABLISHED FB 05/07) (12 Dec 2007, 2:05pm) []

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This subject continues on the introductory database unit. The students will learn about the design and performance issues of relational databases after having learnt the basics in the previous database unit. Earlier we used Pro C programming to introduce embedded sql language. This requires knowledge of C language, which our students do not have (90%). WE have changed this to PHP, which is a web scripting language, enabling connection to ORACLE database.

29 Oct 2002 Medahalli Ramakrishna We have been using the book by Ramakrishnan and Gehrke. It has been observed that only a small number of students purchase the book, and that the standard of the book may be a bit too high for our students. After discussion with the teaching members of db subjects, we have decided to change the book to Connolley and Begg, 3rd ed., Addison Wesley. This is the same as that used in CSE9002. Many of our grad dip students take CSE9002 before taking CSE3000, and hence should have the book. More over in future, we would announce in CSE9002 that this book would be used for the two subjects. Note that the Connolley book is better suited to our students, independent of the other criteria mentioned here.
